Chapter Fifteen
Iâm not sure what I was expecting to find when Mirabelle answered her door, but fuming, pacing and magical raging barely contained was what I got. Not that I blamed her even a little bit, considering. But it meant I wished Iâd accepted Annaâs offer to take me home instead. Not because I didnât want to support my friend, but because frankly, I might as well have not been there. I could have been a piece of furniture for all she actually paid attention to my presence.
Oh, she talked. Muttered, swore, carried on, yes. Dear stars and energies, yes. Endlessly, in a cyclical wave that wound its way over and over from sadness to flashes of shame, into anger and an explosion of rapid-fire curse words back to blame and guilt and sorrow all over again.
It wasnât until she finally stopped, turning to me, the only light from the kitchen casting a long shadow toward me across the living room floor, I realized sheâd not only accepted my presence, she counted on it. Honestly, I had a shiver moment, my necromancer friendâs power humming around her, voice dropping a few notes into the darkly graveled as though sheâd suddenly been taken over by some spirit ready to wreak carnage on the world.
Nope, no such luck. Just Mirabelle deciding anger was the way to go after all.
âIâm going to find out who killed him myself.â Whoa there, missy. âI need your help.â So, on the upside she didnât just know I was there, she cared, if only for her own selfish reasons. On the downside? Hadnât I just agreed to stay out of it, nodded in agreement to Annaâs request? And yet, staring down my scary friend at that moment, the fact Iâd let her down already hit me hard. Sheâd never bring it up, I was sure of that. But she didnât need to. It hovered like an echo in the quiet of her apartment, daring me to turn her down.
Sigh.
âOkay,â I said. Mirabelle inhaled, no doubt another tirade prepared to emerge when I stood and waved that off. If she was going to insist on this truly terrible course of action, Iâd at least get to steer the boat before it crashed headlong into the rocks of Detective Anna Morales and the rest of the Crescent Police Department. âBut weâre doing this my way, Mirabelle.â She stopped abruptly, let out a little sound of surprise, and let me go on. Which, I realized, just made me a coconspirator instead of an unwilling backup. Iâd just have to live with it. âI know you want answers, so letâs dig for some. Before you march off to confront Helen or Ryan or whatever else it is you planned to do to get yourself arrested.â Us. Us arrested. Yikes. âNo more late-night doorstep crashing at the Percy house. Agreed?â
She nodded. Crossed her arms over her chest. Was quiet for so long that I felt those goosebumps return, shattering the spikey anxiety her power created in the room.
